Obama’s higher education reform is misguided - Julian Gaskins

Summary: This article focuses on the issues with Obama's plan to help out financially with students attempting to make their way through college.  His plan is to reward the schools for having their tuition low instead of those that have it high like it currently is.  He wants to make choosing schools easier by giving them a "shopping list" in which they could compare the schools financial packages and more in an easier fashion.  Obama also plans on helping students that have to take out student loans and while this is fantastic for those who really need it, it doesn't benefit the students who work their way through college without loans.

Question: How are schools that have higher tuition costs rewarded by the current financial aid system?

  1. Schools with higher tuition costs get more money so that it can financially aid more students, and therefore, in the long run, get more money, and a more diverse student body. I think it is a good goal that Obama has, but I agree that he is going at it the wrong way.

  2. All education should be free and admission should be based upon academic merit rather than the size of one's bank account. Higher education should not be a commodity for the rich and should be equally available to everyone. Student loans are a trap by which banks can exploit student preying upon their need for higher education in a newly competitive world. Higher education is now a need rather than a desire.

  3. Julian...interesting article but this is outside the purview of the assignment to get at articles/research on bioethics, the question of what it means to be human with regard to science & literature. You're fine for this month but refocus for next month's post.
