Antonio Reybol- Stanford Takes Online Schooling To The Next Academic Level

Antonio Reybol

Summary:

Stanford is now starting to offer free classes online, for free!  However, people who take these classes are not receiving credit but do earn grades for the course.  Many think this is going to be the new way of teaching because many can access the internet.  The students who do complete the course do get a letter of completion, but does not state the universities name.  This was a debate because the course was not paid for, so the professors teaching the course(s) applaud the students themselves.

Question:
Do you think in the future that classes are just going to be on line?  Do you think it will cost as much as it would be to be in a classroom having lectures?  Why or why not?

  1. I think that there is a possibility that classes could and would be mostly online because we are advancing in technology each year and people can already take some classes online today. It would be more convenient for some people to just stay home and do online classes, but there are also some bad things about it. People could be closed in and barely goes out and they could also forget they have online classes and somewhat fall behind and fail. If there will only be online classes later on in the future, I think it would cost somewhat less than paying for a regular school on a campus because you dont have to pay for any like room and board and there probably wouldnt be a big school, so they dont have to pay for that or food or anything. People just have to pay for the classes and any books that they cant get online.

  2. I agree with Kristy. Everything, nowadays, is all done on the internet, thanks to our advanced technology over the last decades. The internet just makes everything so much convenient for everyone to access and complete their work. I predict in the next 20 or 30 years from now, some type of online teaching and online classes will be available for everyone. However, this might change the many aspects of school. Although, it might even benefit it. We just now have to wait and see.

  3. I agree with Kristy and Priscilla, because we are in the time where technology is taking over the world everyday. Everyday there is something new with the technology. So, universities are now starting to have online classes in which they think it'll be easier for students. But, there are also so many distractions on the computer that will affect the students. It mainly depends on the student itself but most likely they'll be distracted with other things going online. We just have to wait and see what the future brings.

  4. I don't believe that all classes in the future will be online. I believe that the traditional way of teaching is more beneficial and helpful to students. I do believe that technology will improve teaching and will make things easier for students and teachers. For example, I think if every student owned an iPad, they can just download their books on it so they wouldn't need to carry it back and forth from their home to school. If classes would be online in the future, I don't think it would cost as much because the students would be able to learn anywhere and all they need would be a computer or some other type of technology to watch the class.

    1. I defiantly agree with my girl Catherine:)
But although it seems that society is heading toward the path of taking classes online, I think that people are losing the true value in a classroom environment. Going to school everyday, although sometimes a hassle, and meeting face to face with teachers and students teaches individuals life long skills. It teaches the individual the skills to listen, communicate, interact, gain others perspective, and more importantly, voice their own opinion. If people rely solely on the internet to receive an education, they will never truly succeed in life. Because success take a lot of aspects into account, not just the degree you earned online or the classes taken. If we rely on the internet, then we slowly isolate ourselves from the world around us. Because honestly, who would really enjoy taking a class online? For one, most people will not take the course seriously, cheat, become bored quickly, and when questions pop up, they will be ignored. Also, the classroom is where you make life long relationships in this world.

  5. I agree with Catherine. I think that there isn't going to be online classes in the future because people would slack off if they were at home taking classes verses in school. Also, a lot of kids don't have access to a computer so it would make it even harder for them to receive an education. I also believe that technology is going to help the way teachers teach; we can already see this with our school and how all the teachers are using PowerPoint, prezi, google docs, and other online methods to help us learn.

  6. I definitely think that there will remain to be an option of both online and in school courses. However, the amount of courses online will skyrocket in the next few years. I also do not think that having more online courses will be beneficial by any means. This will give students the option to procrastinate and slack off in a more lax environment and with no short term consequences.

  7. Antonio--good to see the post and read the comments. It does fall outside the stated assignment guidelines, though, to focus our postings on questions of bioethics, literature & science, the question of what it means to be human, etc. Refocus for next month.
