Summary: In this article, the effects of children carrying heavy backpacks are revealed. Not only does it drain their energy, but it can result in serious back problems when they are older, such as stress fractures, inflammation of growth cartilage, back and neck strain, and nerve damage to neck and shoulders. These children have been compared to pack animals who carry 10-15% of their own body weight on their backs.
Question: Is it the school's responsibility to take care of their students when it comes to backpacks? If yes or no, what are some reasonable solutions to fix this problem?
Backpack use has been apart of human society since the 1900s. But the people back then were smart enough not to carry too much of a load. Staring into the hallways of school, you're able to easily spot out a freshman. Its simple, they're either small as hell, or are carrying their entire locker in their backpack. Serious back problems aren't solely a backpacks fault, its the way the user uses it. It can be the school's responsibility to urge students not to carry such an immense amount of books. Or, backpacks can come with warning labels. But that means that warning labels must be on everything! Water bottles would have "beware, do not consume too much"
ReplyDeleteA reasonable solution for a student to reduce the risk of chronic back pain would to carry some books in your hands, that way it would lessen the load in the backpack. Another solution would be to have a rolling backpack.
ReplyDeleteno it is not the schools responsibility because that part of the "process" is an indiviudal choice of the student. the only part the school may become involved in is if the books weight becomes an issue. if that is the case, then the shcool should work out a plan to provide the student an online textbook or copies for each chapter
ReplyDeleteYes it is the schools responsibility, the teachers have to be mindful what they assigned how heavy the books they assign to take home children will affect the children. SOmetime children don't do homework because of all the heavy books they take home they decided to leave the heavy ones home. SO school teacher should be mindful on how they will assgin homework and what to take home becaus eit affect the health of students in the future.
