Antonio Reybol- FDA must act to remove antibiotics from animal feed: judge

Summary: U.S. Magistrate Judge Theodore Katz has ordered the FDA to continue their investigation and provide evidence that antibiotics are being inserted in animals, and to make sure they are SAFE!  The FDA had started this proceeding back in 1977 but really has not enforced or followed through in their investigation.  We all know that the meat we eat are injected with hormones and antibiotics for multiple reasons.  Because of this, the FDA is being sued by The Natural Resource Defense Council, Center for Science in the Public Interest, and the Union of Concerned Scientists.  These antibiotics that are being injected in the live stock are affecting human health.  It is costing Americans $20 billion for antibiotic-resistant infections.  With this said, Katz has enforced the FDA to continue their proceedings to make sure that the antibiotics are being used are safe.

Question: Regardless if the antibiotics being used in animals are safe, should they be used at all, especially if it affects our health?  Explain.

  1. i feel that if the antibiotics are affecting our health in a bad way, then we should not use it. sometimes it's not worth the risk knowing that if you take it, you know that you could get worse than get better. even if it could somehow help us, doesnt mean it's always the right choice. there are still some other options that people could take than antibiotics with helping them get better. of course we have to think of what the outcome will be and if the risk is too high or if it is worth it

  2. Meat does not need antibiotics to be eaten by humans. The problem is that people eat meat from big factory farms where the worker's can't deal with the health problems of their animals, so they resort to administering antibiotics to solve the health problems that do arise. These big farms are interested in quantity and not the quality of their meat. They use antibiotics to "improve" the bad health quality of their many animals to make up for the small farm's practice of good old fashioned nurturing natural/good health of their animals. Small farms don't need to use antibiotics in their animals because workers are able to tend to their animals individually and collectively so that they never get to the point where they need antibiotics. Prather Ranch is a great small from Northern California farm that practices sustainable farming techniques and produces organic antibiotic and hormone free beef. If we had a bunch of Prather Ranch like farms around the country, the beef we eat would not need to be injected with all the s*#% that is put into them.

  3. I feel that in general the American food industry is messed up. In order to produce large quantities of meat, companies resort to feeding cows or other animals foods that cannot be digested and so the animals somehow develop illnesses that are concealed or "fixed" through all these hormones and antibiotics.

  4. I agree with Charolette, we do not need the antibiotics in the meat to eat and if the antibiotics are harmful to us, injection should not be an issue at all. The course of action should me clear- do not inject the animals we eat with harmful antibiotics. People should be more worried about doing things the right way rather than taking the easy, more time and money effecicant way. The bigger question here is why should the farmers have to inject their livestolk with antibiotics. The world we live in should not put a farmer in a position in which he or she feels that they should inject to save money. I'm not taking the blame off the farmers, I just think this situation Touches upon a much larger issue and mentality that plagues our world today.

  6. I agree with Charlotte and Ann Marie. If any type of antibiotics is injected into our meat then it should not be issued at all. I don't want to worry if something is in my food, that should be the least of my worries especially in this life time.

  7. I agree with Charlotte, Ann, and Tiff. Anything that's being injected into my food for growth or hormone purposes is probably meant for something right? I mean I'm sure the FDA aren't trying to kill us with the antibiotics. But if it's affecting our health, then that's when a problem occurs. Now I might even become a vegetarian!
